Shopping for a hat is always tricky, and since I learnt to knit and crochet it seems a bit pointless. Why spend £20 on something I can make out of scrap wool for free in an afternoon?
If you can't crochet, just google it and watch a couple of videos. Instructions are in UK, you can google a comparison table too.
Simple Beret
You will need:
1 ball of wool, pretty chunky stuff.
Size 5 crochet hook.
A quiet evening!
Ch3, join in a ring.
Row 1. 6 DC in ring.
Row 2. 2 DC in each stitch.
Row 3. * Increase one by working 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in next stitch*. Repeat from * around row.
Row 4. * 2 DC in next stitch, 1 DC in each of the next 2 sts*. Repeat from * around Row.
At this point, rather than working in rows, begin to work in a spiral pattern and continue until the hat measures about 9 or 10 inches. Work even for 1 inch. Then decrease by skipping every 10th st until at your head size. Work 2 rows even. Cut yarn and fasten.
Et voila! A beautiful beret!
